It is well known and documented that in our young Republic’s history, the Philippines has been visited and ravaged by natural calamities ranging from strong Pacific typhoons, flooding and volcanic eruptions to name a few. These natural calamities cause serious morbidity and mortality to our fellow Filipinos and a lot of them are displaced from their homes as a result.
Being a third world country, our government with its meager resources cannot take care of its citizens without the help and aid from donations from her ever giving population and NGOs, non-governmental organizations. Tau Mu Sigma Phi, the Thomasian Medical Students’ Fraternity, has long been in the forefront of providing financial aid in our country’s disaster relief operations.
Most of the money generated are either channeled to our university through our student brothers or directly to organizations such as the University of Santo Tomas Alumni Association or USTMAA, the Philippine National Red Cross and Gawad Kalinga. The fraternity has likewise provided manpower during medical missions that deal with the aftermath of such calamities.
This is in line with Tau Mu’s ideal of SERVICE, which in addition to ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE, LEADERSHIP and BROTHERHOOD, serve to guide us in providing some relief to the plight of our fellow Filipinos in their time of great need.
